Alamout , A historical place
Alamout castle which by dictionary meaning means Eagles’s Nest, is a famous fortress lacated in Alamout region in Qazvin. Iran. The fortress AKA Hassan e Sabbah Castle used to be the headquarter of a Nizari ruler called Hassan e Sabbah from 1090 AD to 1256 AD. After the period of Nizari Shia under the leadership of Hassan e Sabbah ended, the Fortress was captured and ruined by Mongolian invaders.
Ovan is a beautiful alpine lake in Alamout region in Alborz range in Qazvin. The lake is fed by a stream called Ovan which comes from the high mountain sorrounding the lake. Here is an ideal place for camping and boating alongside fishing and bird watching.
Ovan is 1800 meters above the sea and occupies an area of 70000 meters.
Lambesar is probably the biggest fortress in Alamout region. It is located in Central Alboourz mountains in south of Caspian Sea about 100 km away from Tehran. In north east side there is a village called Razmain.
The first ruler who was appointed as governor of that region by Hassan e Sabbah was Kiya Buzurg Ummid (died 1138 AD).Today we can only see the ruine s of Lambesar but they are still exciting and the view is breath taking.
Hassan e Sabbah
The picture shows the founder of Nizari Ismaili Shia sect Hassan e Sabbah riding his horse with a sword in hand. According to historians, he was a strong dominant leader who had an army of faithful assassins called Hashashin who were even ready to kill themselves for his life and safety.
Hassan Sabbah was born in a religious family in 1050s in city of Qom, Iran. From early childhood he started learning languages, astronomy, mathmatics and philosophy. At the same time he showed great interest in 12 IMAM shia beliefs. He also had a trip to Egypt to learn some religious ideas from some masters in that country.
When he came back to Iran 1088, he searched for a base to start his mission. He ended up in a castle in Qazvin, Alamout which was built in 865 in a valley which had an area of 50 to 5 km. Hassan almost captured this castle with no bloodshed. Some say that Hassan took over the castle by paying money to the former owner. However, some say that he united all people sorrounding the castle in villages and make them as his converts who strated to beleive in his ideas.
Hassan Sabbah was a very educated man. He was famous for his knowldege on many sciences, praying, fasting, astronomy and math. He knew the Holy Qoran by heart and even could quote from many textbooks written by other muslims. He had the reputation of The old man of the mountain. In his fortress in Almout castle, he had a huge library with thousands of books in many different majores including alchemy, medicine and astronomy.
His followers also had great knowledge on different sciences. Some of them were great doctors and herbal medicine scientists. The products that were mostly cultivated in the valley had great medical values and even exported to other cities and countries. They were all faithful to their leader Hassan E Sabbah.
